El Paso has been Dee Margo’s home for 40 years, and in June 2017, he was elected as the 51st Mayor of El Paso, Texas. He moved to El Paso, Texas in 1977 from Nashville, Tennessee, where he attended Vanderbilt University on a football scholarship, to join his father-in-law at John D. Williams Company (JDW). In February of 1981, 6 days after his 29th birthday, his father-in-law suffered a fatal heart attack. He purchased JDW from the estate, and expanded the company from 6 employees to 70, in the span of 30 years.

During these years, he served as Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army, participated in the founding of the Regional Economic Development Corporation (REDCO) – now the Borderplex Alliance, became the Chairman of the El Paso Chamber, and gave his time to several non-profits, including Operation Noel. He was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 2010, in 2013, he was appointed President of the EPISD Board of Managers, and most recently, he was appointed by the Governor to serve on the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas Oversight Committee. He is also a part of the Texas Municipal League Executive Committee.

Mayor Margo currently serves as Vice Chair for Border Security on the U.S. Conference of Mayors Criminal and Social Justice Committee, as well as Co-Chair of USCM’s COVID-19 Response and Health Equity Working Group.

He is also proud of his 3 grandchildren who are 5th generation El Pasoans.

Mayor Margo’s tenure has been full of major events the City did not expect. Starting with the immigration crisis, followed by the August 3 tragedy, and now the COVID-19 pandemic. The Mayor’s focus has continued to be the safety of El Pasoans and its binational neighbors.
